Evaluation and analysis system based on video technology
In order to palliate multiple potential sources of errors, difficulties in verifying results, and the hazards associated with the manual method of taking readings of the condition of infrastructures, SETRA inc. has developed an evaluation and analysis system based on video technology (see below).
The implentation of this versatile and effective instrument offers new possibilities to managers of road infrastructures who now have access to a visual database, thus facilitating the task of planning repair and maintenance operations.
Each road segment is filmed using one or several (4) high-resolution cameras connected to various measuring, recording and picture-processing instruments installed inside the vehicle.
A powerful software then references each image to a specific road segment (number of the segment, linkage, etc.) These instruments can be packed in boxes, transported anywhere in the world and installed in any type of 7-passenger vehicle.
The images are then retrieved by a parameterable software, allowing the user to analyse the conditions of various infrastructures (pavement, curbs, sidewalks, traffic signs, etc.) The analysis method consists in selecting the desired view, identifying the type of degradation present, and measuring it using the mouse. A plan view of the measure elements (DXF format) is then automatically generated and a database (DBF format) can be activated using various spreadsheets or management systems.
If required, other measuring instruments (depth of ruts, ride quality, surface profile, GPS, etc.) can be added to the basic system.
Although SETRA inc. can offer expert services for data collection, analysis, and processing, both the measuring and analysis devices can be sold at competitive prices. Simply contact the SETRA inc. offices for additional details.
Evaluation of ride quality and effects of seasonal variations
The ride quality of pavements is usually measured using a "Mays" type roadmeter connected to a computer allowing instant transfer of data collected to a standard format database compatible with most management systems. These readings also allow us to determine the intensity of the effect of seasonal variations on the pavement.

Evaluation of structural capacity
The "Dynaflect" deflectometre is one of the instruments used to measure the pavement's capacity to support the weight of passing vehicles. It also allows us to locate deficiencies which affect underlying structures.
Stratigraphic analyses
In some cases, more detailed studies can be made using a georadar or through stratigraphic analyses by surveying with an auger in order to evaluate the conditions in which the interventions will be made and determine to what extent the materials can be recovered.
